Portable Server update 1

I have been working diligently on getting this box the way I want it. I have made some modifications and added some ideas.

I originally had the Abit motherboard with an Intel E6600 processor in the box. I also got the Abit Airpace PCIe wireless adapter and gave the box a go. Oh, I had ordered the screen and had it delivered overnight. I installed that and installed Ubuntu.

I did an lspci and lsusb to see what it recognized. OH BOY, 90% of the devices were unknown and half of the things installed were not working. Oddly enough, the touch screen WAS recognized, but it needed serious calibration.

So, I did some research and decided to switch platforms. I went with an AMD 5600+ and ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard. With the money saved I purchased 2×2gig OCZ 6400 RAM (the Fry’s component guy told me that that memory would not work on that particular motherboard, I had done my homework and knew it would… it did)

The project has changed up a bit. I have decided to not put wireless actually on the server itself, but I plan to cannibalize a Linksys WRT54GL and add it to the innards of the box. This way I will have a full wireless router with the system at all times. :D

Currently, the following is installed in the box:

  • Asus M2MPV-VM Motherboard
  • AMD 5600+ X2 processor
  • Western Digital Raptor 76 gig
  • OCZ 2×2 Gig 6400 RAM
  • Thermaltake 7″ Touchscreen
  • Thermaltake 650 Watt Powersupply

All of this is working with Ubuntu.

I will continue to update as I build more. I plan on brining it to the SFVLUG meeting on Saturday the 16th and get some ideas for the other modifications.

Peace
